More than half a million drivers have been fined this year for driving without a licence in Turkey, according to data released by Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, who has announced an increase in inspections to curb the rising number of accidents on Turkish roads.
According to Turkish media, Yerlikaya shared on his social media profile that a total of 535,062 drivers were fined so far in 2024 for driving without a valid licence, while another 134,000 were fined for speeding, one of the main causes of fatal traffic accidents, as the minister recalled.
According to official figures, Turkey recorded more than 1.3 million road accidents last year, resulting in 6,548 deaths. One of the most tragic occurred last August, when a bus full of passengers crashed into a bridge in the Polatlı district outside Ankara, killing 11 people and injuring 24.
‘Please, both for your own safety and for the safety of other people, do not get behind the wheel without a valid driver’s licence,’ Yerlikaya requested via social media. The minister also reported that more than 23,000 drivers were penalised in 2024 for not wearing seat belts in the vehicle.
