A tribute to the victims of the assault on the Mavi Marmara ship was organised in Istanbul on Sunday, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the assault by Israeli army commandos. The Mavi Marmara led the Freedom Flotilla with which hundreds of activists from around the world sought to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza. On the night of May 31, 2010, Israeli soldiers raided the ship and killed 9 Turkish activists (a 10th victim died in 2014) and wounded 56 others. Years later, it emerged that Turkey wanted to declare war on Israel over the incident, and that only the US mediation prevented it.
